Our area runs from the Norfolk coast down through Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire, and takes in Milton Keynes, the Chiltern towns of Buckinghamshire and parts of Greater London, including Enfield and Havering. That covers very different housing, and the housing decides what kind of leak you are likely to have and which test will find it.

In the farmland of Norfolk, Suffolk and the Fens, many homes stand back from the road, and the supply pipe may cross a yard or a field to reach the house. Older terraces in the cities and seaside towns sometimes share a supply with next door. Houses built in recent decades often have heating pipes in concrete floors, and new builds may have underfloor heating, fed from a row of valves in a cupboard.

If your water company has written about a leak, who owns which pipe is much the same wherever you live. The main in the road, and the stretch of pipe as far as your boundary or meter, are the company's to look after. Beyond that point, the length running into the house usually belongs to the owner, and we can trace a leak along it from the surface, as well as on the pipes indoors.

Common questions

Possibly. Not every town and village we reach has a page of its own, so ring and ask. Tell us the postcode and we will say there and then whether we can reach you and roughly when a visit could be booked.

The order is the same: readings first, then the search, then a second method before anything is marked. The starting point changes. A long rural supply means questions about its route and length. A leak into a flat usually means getting into the flat above, and a newer home may mean waiting for the heating to warm the floor.

The company named on your water bill. It does not always match the town name, because several companies supply this area and their boundaries do not follow county lines. Speak to that company about a leak letter or any leak allowance it offers. If it asks for evidence of the leak, our report gives the location, methods, readings and photographs.

Yes, provided someone can open up for us. If you live some distance away, tell us who keeps a key nearby. When the person paying will not be there on the day, we may take payment in advance and then confirm the date.

Visits are usually booked within 24 to 48 hours, at a time we arrange with you. Lines are open 8am to 8pm, every day. Jot down the meter reading or the boiler gauge, or photograph the damp patch, before you ring, as it speeds things up.
