Old iron supply pipe under a town house yard
The property
A Georgian town house near the centre, its old iron supply pipe running from the street meter down a side passage and under a brick-paved yard.
The problem
A letter about constant use arrived, and upstairs taps had lost flow. One patch of yard bricks stayed dark after the rest had dried.
How we found it
The meter's dial still turned once the kitchen stop tap was off, which put the leak on the buried pipe. Iron carries sound, and the hiss under the yard was loud. Tracer gas agreed.
The outcome
We marked the spot, photographed it and priced the repair separately, warning that old iron can be weak elsewhere. Our report went with the owner's query about the bill.
