Musty kitchen corner blamed on the sea air
The property
A small brick cottage in the old town, its cold supply entering under the front step and crossing beneath quarry tiles to the kitchen sink.
The problem
A tide mark low on the kitchen wall and a musty smell kept returning after redecorating. The owners had blamed salt air and an old house.
How we found it
With every tap off, the meter moved. Readings peaked along the floor by the sink, not the outside wall, and tracer gas in the cold pipe rose through the grout there.
The outcome
The leak was marked and photographed. Two quarry tiles came up for a repair priced on its own, and the owners could redecorate knowing the cause.
