Leak detection in Amersham Old Town

In the Old Town, houses and shops stand wall to wall, and one supply pipe can serve several of them. Our engineer Charlie works out whose length is leaking before anyone digs.

The Old Town, Amersham's historic heart, sits in the valley below the newer town on the hill. Its old houses and shops stand close along the street, many joined to their neighbours. That makes leak detection in Amersham Old Town as much about old pipe routes as the leak itself.

One supply can feed two or three neighbouring properties, or a pipe can cross the yard next door. Closing each property's stop tap one after another, with an eye on the meter, shows which length is losing water. That helps neighbours agree who should fix it.

Shared supply under the back yards

The property

Two joined cottages in the Old Town on one supply pipe. It enters the first cottage's yard, then branches under a wall to reach the second.

The problem

Both households had water company letters about continuous use. Each assumed the leak was next door's, and neither wanted to dig up a yard on a guess.

How we found it

Closing each stop tap in turn showed the leak was on the shared length. A ground microphone narrowed it under the first yard, and tracer gas confirmed the point.

The outcome

The marked point was photographed. The report showed the leak sat on the shared pipe, helping the two households agree how to split the repair.

Water bill jump at a town centre shop

The property

A shop in an old building in the town centre, with a small kitchen at the back and a stone flagged floor laid straight onto the earth.

The problem

The business water bill had roughly doubled. No damp was visible, and a plumber who checked the taps and toilet found nothing dripping.

How we found it

Before the shop opened, its pipework was pressure tested in sections and the kitchen feed failed. Moisture readings rose at the foot of the back wall, and listening on the flagstones agreed.

The outcome

One flagstone was lifted at the marked spot. The report went to the business and its landlord, who owned the building, for their insurers.

From the phone call to the marked spot

1

Tell us what you share

When you ring, mention whether neighbours had letters too, where your stop tap is, and whether your pipe may pass under another property, as our terms ask.

2

Test which pipe loses water

With every tap off, each stop tap is closed in turn while we watch the meter. Where the meter stops tells us whose length is leaking, before any listening begins.

3

Trace, confirm and mark

A ground microphone finds where the leak is loudest. Tracer gas or a moisture reading must back it up before anything is marked and photographed for both households.

Who we help in Amersham Old Town

Neighbours on a shared supply

If the water company has written to more than one house, the leak may sit on a pipe you share. Testing from each stop tap shows which length leaks.

Shops, cafes and offices

A business water bill that jumps with no visible leak needs tracing. Tell us it is business premises, and your trading hours, when you book; payment may be taken first.

Owners of older houses with damp walls

Damp at the foot of a wall shared with next door may come from a supply pipe, a heating pipe or no pipe at all. Readings and a meter test tell which.

How we search an old street

Acoustic listening

Under flagstones, brick paving or soil, a leaking pipe under pressure makes a faint rushing noise. Our ground microphone hears it, and the noise grows loudest over the point where the pipe has split.

Moisture meters

Damp creeps through old brick and solid floors. Taking readings at intervals along a wall finds the wettest spot, and that usually sits closest to the pipe feeding it.

Tracer gas

Where a pipe is too quiet to hear, tracer gas, a hydrogen and nitrogen mix, is fed into it. A sensor on the surface picks it up where it escapes.

Shared supplies in older streets

Look at your bill: the company named there is your water supplier, and it maintains its main and its pipe to the boundary or meter. A shared supply is worth raising with neighbours early, because the leak may not be on your length at all. Ask whether next door had a letter too.

Business and landlord insurance

In a rented building, the landlord's buildings insurance may be the policy for tracing the leak, while your own business policy may cover stock and fittings. Check both before booking. Our report gives the location, methods, readings and photographs, and is released after payment. The insurer, not us, decides whether a claim is paid.

Common questions in Amersham Old Town

Ring us before anyone digs. Older streets can have shared supplies, and testing from each stop tap shows which length is leaking. A shared main is outside our home water leak promise, which means the agreed price stands however the visit turns out.

Tell us your opening hours when you ring, and we will talk through timing. Some tests need the water turned off for a while, so warn your staff. The agreed price buys a booked half or full day on site.

If your pipe runs under their property, you will need their agreement for us to test there, and for any repair. Our terms ask you to tell us about pipework running to or under a neighbouring property when you book.

Card details hold the booking. Payment is taken when the visit ends, by card or bank transfer; we accept no cash or cheques. A business, or a payer who will not be on site, may be asked to pay up front instead.

Usually, and the repair is costed separately from the search. Any repair figure we give you beforehand stands only if we do the work while we are there for the detection. The 3 month guarantee on our repairs covers the pipework and fittings we fit.
