Fenland market town homes and shops

Leak detection in March for homes and businesses

In the town of March, the leaks we trace are often under a front lawn, a bungalow floor or the tiles of a shop. We pinpoint them from above ground and can usually repair the pipework too.

March is a Fenland market town, with older terraces and semis near the centre and bungalows and newer estates further out. In many older homes, the original metal supply pipe still runs under the front garden, where a slow leak can soak into the ground unseen.

It is also a working town, with shops, salons and small businesses along its streets. For them, and for homeowners, leak detection in March is usually about getting a problem found and fixed without closing for the day or digging up more than one spot.

Typical leaks in March homes and shops

Greener strip across the lawn of an older semi

The property

A semi-detached house from between the wars, with a long front lawn, the meter in the pavement and its original metal supply pipe.

The problem

Upstairs taps had lost pressure and a strip of lawn stayed greener than the rest, then a letter warned of continuous use at the meter.

How we found it

The meter kept moving after the indoor stop tap was shut, so the leak was outside. The ground microphone peaked halfway along the lawn; tracer gas rose there too.

The outcome

Digging at the mark uncovered a cracked length of old pipe. We fitted a new section while we were there, priced separately from the detection.

Rising water bill at a high street salon

The property

A hair salon on a concrete floor, with hot water pipes run beneath it from the heater at the back to the basins at the front.

The problem

The water bill had jumped and the tiles near the basins felt warm. Nothing dripped, and closing for long was not an option.

How we found it

Closing the heater's cold feed stopped the meter, putting the leak on the hot pipework. The thermal camera found warmth spreading under the tiles; tracer gas confirmed the point.

The outcome

Under our business terms, payment came before the booking was confirmed. We marked and photographed the point, then mended the pipe during the visit at a separately agreed price.

Who calls us from March

Owners of older semis and terraces

A water company letter, weak pressure at the taps or a greener strip of lawn can all point to the supply pipe, which we trace so the garden opens in one place.

Shops, salons and small businesses

A sudden jump in a business water bill often means water escaping somewhere on site. We find which pipe is losing it and trace the point. For businesses, payment can be needed before we confirm the booking.

Bungalow owners topping up the boiler

Bungalows on solid floors often have heating pipes in the screed. A rough tally of weekly refills, and whether sealer went in, lets us plan the tests to suit.

Homes, businesses and one network

Anglian Water supplies March. Homes are billed by Anglian Water, while a business may get its bill from a separate water retailer, but the main in the road is Anglian Water's either way. On the owner's side of the boundary or meter, the pipe is normally theirs to repair, whoever sends the bill.

Found, agreed, then repaired

1

Find it and prove it

Charlie works out which pipe is losing water, follows it from the surface and gets a second method to agree. He then marks and photographs the point for you.

2

Agree the repair price

Once the leak is exposed, we can usually repair the pipe. That repair has a separate price, and any figure quoted beforehand applies only if we repair it on the visit that found it.

3

Repair and the 3 month guarantee

Our repairs are guaranteed for 3 months, covering only what we fit, the new pipe and fittings, not the whole system. Old, weak pipe sometimes fails elsewhere once tested; that work is quoted separately.

Tools for gardens, floors and shops

Acoustic listening

A metal pipe leaking under a lawn or path makes a steady sound. Walking the microphone along the route, we listen for where it peaks, right above the leak.

Tracer gas

A hydrogen and nitrogen mix goes into the isolated pipe. Wherever it escapes, it rises through soil, tiles or concrete to be picked up by the detector above.

Pressure testing

Closing off a length of pipe and watching its gauge shows whether it leaks, so we know which pipe to follow before the search begins.

Places around March

From the town we reach Wisbech to the north, Whittlesey to the west, Chatteris to the south, Ramsey and Warboys to the south west, and Littleport to the south east, over the fen towards Ely.

Business policies and the landlord's insurer

Tenants of shops and units often find the building sits on the landlord's insurance, not their own business policy. Find out which policy applies, and whether it includes trace and access, before booking. Our report gives the location, methods, readings and photographs, and any repair is priced apart from the detection.

Common questions in March

Usually, yes. With the indoor stop tap shut, a meter that still turns means the leak is outdoors. Listening along the pipe with a ground microphone, then tracer gas, puts it at one marked spot rather than along the whole run.

Say it is a business when you call, and who is paying. We agree a half or full day’s price first and may take payment before confirming the booking. No find, no fee on home water leaks does not cover businesses.

Normally your side of the boundary or meter is yours, and Anglian Water looks after the main and its pipe up to there. A letter about water passing your meter all the time usually points to a leak on your stretch of pipe.

Yes. Mention how often it needs refilling and whether leak sealer has gone in, as sealer can stop testing working. We isolate parts of the heating and scan with it warm. Heating visits are priced in advance, outside the home water leak promise.

Our terms ask for free parking within 100 m, so mention permits, yellow lines or a shared yard when you book. Paid parking, if it cannot be avoided, is charged at cost, the same way as any materials we use.
